Employer Audits

The Social Security Administration is permitted by law to audit employer records to assure the accuracy of the Employer Quarterly Tax Returns submitted by employers to Social Security. The Social Security Administration is provided the authority under the law to issue subpoenas to employer’s records to perform an audit.

Employers are required to submit reports of wages and payments for all employees. To assure that all employers comply with this provision, periodic and random audits are performed to determine the accuracy of reports as well as to correct mistakes. If it is determined that wages have been reported in error or not at all, a supplemental Employer’s Quarterly Tax Return must be filed with payment including penalty and interest on all underreported or non-reported wages.

Employees are also encouraged to contact Social Security and determine if all their wages have been reported. If they disagree with our records, an audit will be conducted to verify the accuracy of the record.
