Kolonia Town police chief dies of heart attack

Kolonia Police Department Chief Benter Shoniber died from a heart condition Saturday evening. Shoniber was transported to Pohnpei State Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. According to hospital reports, Shoniber suffered an accute myocardial infarction, a common type of heart attack.

Kolonia Mayor Mike Peterson said he had seen Shoniber's positive impact throughout the years. "He is one of the most senior employees of our government," Peterson said. "I was in elementary school when he started working for the town."

Shoniber became chief of the Kolonia Town Police Department in 1987. Peterson said he had become a respected member of the community in his years of service.

"Everybody liked him, he's a good leader," Peterson said. "A lot of officers looked up to him because of his leadership skills."

Shoniber's funeral began Saturday night and he was buried on Sunday, February 13, 2005.
