Clean-up/Beautification Program For the New Millenium. A declaration has been issued by the Governor, declaring the two days as the final days to clean up and beautify the Sate as our welcome to the New Millennium. Prior to the two days, coordination of the clean up program will be made with local governments, state agencies, NGOs, and other organizations to clean up and beautify the state, especially near the roads. Everyone is urged to participate in the program. The Committee on Clean-up/Beautification is coordinating the program.
December 31, 1999
1. Contests (Part I)
Some of the singing and kahlek contests will begin at 1:00pm at Mohs Tikitik to be performed by various groups and individuals. Prizes will be awarded to winners after Part II on January 1, 2000 is completed.
A brief ceremony will be conducted before the contest begins. Brief remarks will be given by the Mayor of Kolonia Town, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, and a representative of mwoalen wahu en Pohnpei.
2. Worship Services With the Old and New Millennium Themes
Worship services will be held by the various churches throughout Pohnpei, including the outer islands. All churches are urged to participate in this program. The committee on Interdenominational Worship Service is coordinating this program and the interdenominational worship service on January 1, 2000.
3. Fireworks For the New Millennium
Beginning at midnight and for around 30 minutes, fireworks will be performed at the Lidakihka Beach. All other groups are asked to participate in this event with sirens, bells, etc. The Committee on Fireworks is coordinating this program. The Committee on Public Safety is responsible for the traffic on the Dekehtik causeway.
4. Sakau Ceremony
This is the Pohnpei Traditional sakau ceremony that will welcome the New Millennium with Pohnpeian wahu. Five stones will be used, one stone from each of the five municipalities. Mwoalen Wahu is responsible for the ceremony in accordance with the Pohnpei tradition and customs.
5. Interdenominational Worship Service For The New Millennium
The various church denominations on Pohnpei that include Roman Catholic Church, United Church of Christ, Assembly of God, Seventh-Day Adventist, etc. will be united to offer an interdenominational worship service for the New Millennium.
6. Lunch
(No. 7 & 8 will be done concurrently in two different places and may be done during part of the lunch time.)
7. Dedication of the New Millennium Time Vault
A time vault containing historical information, information on the present governments and government officials, significant events that dominate the current scene, etc. will be dedicated for the new millennium. The vault will be located on the side of the Spanish Wall facing Ambros Store. The Committee on the New Millennium Time Vault is working on the content of the vault.
8. Tree Planting For The New Millennium
Ceremony will be held to plant a tree dedicated to the new millennium. The planting of the tree will be done in the Pohnpei Botanical Garden. A tree that is native to Pohnpei has been selected. It is the banyan (aiaw) tree. The Committee on Tree Planting is coordinating this program.
